Dr. Tom Shumack
DentistBSc, BDent (Hons)
Tom was born and raised in Newcastle on the mid north coast of New South Wales. He lived in Sydney for many years where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and a Bachelor of Dentistry with Honours from the University of Sydney.
Tom has spent time working in Alice Springs, where he enjoyed weekends exploring the many waterholes, hiking trails and dry riverbeds of the West & East Macdonald Ranges. Tom’s wife Claire grew up in Wagga and after some time away they have recently decided to return.
Tom considers patient education, preventative and minimal intervention dentistry the most important aspects of treatment planning. He believes dentistry to be the perfect balance between medicine, design and teaching. Patients often comment that they feel comfortable under his care because of his calm and confident style of communication, explaining risk factors and treatment options using easy-to-understand concepts and analogies. He is passionate about evidenced based practice and a career of continued learning.
During the summer, Tom enjoys cycling and everything watersports including kitesurfing, waterskiing, fishing and surfing. In the winter he enjoys getting involved with the community through rugby coaching and getting down to the ski slopes. Tom also has a background in music and theatre. His latest musical goal is to learn to play the harmonica. He and his wife have just welcomed the arrival of their second child.
