Sports injuries and your teeth!

You may be surprised to find out that 13-39% of all dental injuries are sports-related. Injuries are twice as common in males as females, with the maxillary central incisor being the most commonly injured tooth (that's the big tooth in the front of the mouth).

Once a tooth is fractured it can be repaired however the crack or fracture will not heal as it would in a bone and the tooth will forever require ongoing care.

Although in this day and age we can repair teeth so that they look as good as new either with tooth coloured fillings or crowns, prevention is much better than cure!

  1. Dentists recommend that you wear a well fitting custom made mouth-guard to protect your teeth.  

  2. We recommend that you have the fit and condition of your existing mouth-guard checked at the start of each sporting season.

  3. For growing bodies it is necessary to have a new mouth-guard made each year to accommodate growth of the jaws and eruption of new big teeth during late childhood and the teenage years.

  4. Ensure you wear your mouth-guard to training as well as on match day, as we commonly see damage to teeth that has occurred at training.

  5. Make sure you keep your mouth-guard clean and hygienic. We recommend cleaning your mouth-guard using Dr Marks Hygienie !
